The Quadram Institute, Centre for Food and Health
Norwich UK

The Quadram Institute is a new centre for food and health research to be located at the Norwich Research Park. Under one roof, the Quadram Institute will integrate research teams from the current Institute of Food Research (IFR), the University of East Anglia’s (UEA) Faculty of Science and the Norwich Medical School with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital’s (NNUH) gastrointestinal endoscopy facility. The Quadram Institute’s mission is to develop solutions to worldwide challenges in human health, food and disease. The new five storey building, designed by NBBJ Architects and built by Wates Construction, will be named the Centre for Food and Health (CFH). The CFH will be a unique multidisciplinary hub for world-leading research in the important fields of food, diet and health. The facility includes cutting edge research space including ultra-low vibration rooms for high-powered imaging equipment. The structure of the building will comprise reinforced concrete slabs, columns and walls to meet the vibration, loading and flexibility demands of the facility. In some areas the slabs will be exposed to take advantage of the inherent thermal mass of the structure, reducing the energy required to heat and cool the building. Client: Institute of Food Research (IFR), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH), University of East Anglia (UEA). Architect: NBBJ. Main Contractor: Wates Construction / Wates Group. Engineers: Buro Happold, Ramboll, AECOM. Ground Source Heat Pumps: Groenholland. Concrete Frame: JB Structures. Landscape Architects: FIRA. Other parties: Norwich Research Partners LLP, Norwich Research Park.
